Read All About It Here:
Emerge is a multimedia artwork combining the durational painting of Nitin Mukul with movement by Parijat Desai of Parijat Desai Dance Company and sound artist Sabina Rosas.
The title of the piece is multivalent, referring to the Spring and Summer seasons when the flora is in bloom, as well as our collective emergence from the isolation we imposed on ourselves to navigate the pandemic safely. Made observations during the pandemic that showed the natural world flourishing while we sheltered in place. NASA satellites measured a drop in air pollution from space over the Northeastern United States. The process for making the durational painting respects the properties of materials in the natural and artificial world as having their agency and spirit. This is revealed in the image
as we watch its components dematerialize, guided by the ambient conditions of the site; they are made in light, temperatures, time of day, location, our climate at large, and historical resonance. These pieces begin by layering paint in sheets of ice, freezing each layer of paint and material to accumulate layers of color and texture. Then, placing the frozen mass outside, it’s allowed to melt according to natural weather conditions, filming the entire process. This is a new context for understanding abstract painting that calls for deep viewing and appreciating the potential of materials used to act with their agency. We dedicate this piece to those lost in the pandemic, our essential workers, and the need for climate awareness.
