RDRC Announces: Security Station @The Plaza Beach 20th Street
QUEENS, N.Y. (September 24, 2020) – The Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) is pleased to announce that a Police Security-Station was delivered to the Beach 20th Street Pedestrian Plaza. The Security-Station is located at the entrance of the Beach 20th Street Plaza. The Beach 20th Street Plaza Security-Station is the result of a collaboration between the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, NYPD 103rd Precinct, NYPD 101st Precinct and RDRC.
“We are grateful to Hope Knight, President & CEO and James Vaccaro, Director of Security & Quality Control (GJDC), Deputy Inspector Dennis Tavalaro and Detective Marc Costa (103rd Precinct), Captain Eric Robinson and Sgt. Patrick McGrath (101st Precinct) for making this possible as well as the efforts of RDRC’s Valerie Stevens, Senior Project Manager for making this possible” stated Kevin Alexander, President & CEO of RDRC.
The need for increased monitoring and police presence at the Plaza and throughout the Downtown Far Rockaway Business District is a result of the City’s decision to a establish a shelter residence for approximately 200 persons at the Wingate and Best Hotels located on Beach 21st Street earlier this summer. Understanding the challenges that this would create, RDRC and the 101st Precinct have been in constant communication to develop ways to address the growing safety concerns raised by local residents, workers and businesses. As a result, RDRC and the 101st have identified several ways to increase police presence, beginning with the installation of a Security-Station at the Beach 20th Street Plaza. Once equipped, the 101st Precinct and RDRC as the Beach 20th Street Plaza manager will be able to remotely monitor not only activities within the Plaza but of neighboring storefronts along Beach 20th Street.
