The Renaissance Center

The Renaissance Center

renaissanceThe O’Kane building was built in the 1930’s and remains one of downtown Far Rockaways’ most recognizable buildings. Standing five stories tall and with almost 9,000 square feet of commercial space the building was purchased by RDRC in the 2001.

For over 10 years the building has remained empty and only minimal repair work as RDRC struggled to raise funds to restore the building at an estimated cost of $1.9 million. While many questions arose over the years about when would the construction begin, RDRC always remained steadfast in our response: “In order to provide the services that our community constituents need, we must keep the debt service low. This is the only way we can transform the O’Kane Building into the Renaissance Center.”

In late 2013, RDRC began renovations to the Renaissance Center, erecting a temporary bridge, removing debris, repairing the roof and preparing for the installation of over 96 new windows. We are excited about starting the project and what it will mean to our community well beyond becoming our administrative headquarters. The Renaissance Center will feature an expanded Time Warner Learning Center, meeting and conference space for up to 100 guests, a small business incubator, ground level commercial retail space and a suite of small professional office spaces.
